Ever wear a “sweater guard”? A syndicated newspaper story about the fashion influence of the TV show “Glee” pictures ladylike Emma in a cardigan sweater with a two-part sweater guard. If they are not in department stores, look for sweater guards at vintage jewelry booths or websites. They were very popular in the 1940s and ’50s.
I have two monogramed sterling guards that I wore in high school & college in the 60’s. Just keeping up with my preppie friends at HB & Laurel! Glad to see they’re back!
How well I remember my precious Mother-in-law who had tiny shoulder wearing her sweaters and holding them on with sweater guards. After she died, I received them. Now will wear them with fond remembrance and tell anyone who asks what they are and how I got them. As the little grandson asked in a recent Pickles cartoon, “Grandma are you vintage or antique?” Think I now know the answer.
I remember sweater guards and used them. Mine were broken often, since I was probably too young to really be using them (and I was rough on my clothes, climbing trees and all).
What I still have is a glass dog with two puppies on leashes (chains) and all pin to the garment. Scatter pin? It’s so cute, and too fragile! to wear (shadow box item).
I love sweater guards but what your description sounds like is a scatter pin we use to wear with our boyfriend class ring hanging on the center chain. As a matter of fact I still have mine from the early 60’s
My mom had one of those clips. The clips were silver and small with a ornate chain, she told me it was for keeping up straps on slips and camisoles. Hope this helps you GeeBee.
Also I would like to say I have a small collection of sweater guards. Mine from my childhood, and some I have bought in shops or Ebay. I think they are wonderful… the set you have shown is gorgeous! Love it!
Now I really feel old! I not only remember them, I still use them!
I have a piece that seems to be a sweater guard, very simple. But it has three clips, one hangs down like pendant. Anyone know what this might be?
