This is a paint box, handmade, brass and copper, with a water holder inside.

It may be an opium box.

Its a betel box. A very plain example. It holes a combination of betel nuts, pepper leaves, damp tobacco leaves, areca nuts and as the white residue in the round compartment show powdered lime aka sodium hydroxide. When combined they produce a somewhat potent stimulant. Muslim in origin found in bursa and other areas.

A pipe case? There's room for tobacco and a spot to empty the ashes into, a spot for matches and a compartment to store the pipe.
Perhaps it was used for traveling.

From what looks like a very dirty interior, I would guess it’s a box used by an artist, to hold watercolors or oils, with a container for water or turpentine.

I think this may be a lunch box. I have one similar, only it doesn't have compartments.
