Q: I’m trying to identify the maker of a plate I have. It’s marked with the letter “B” over a stylized castle. The mark is flanked by an “L” in blue, suggesting to me that there might have been a set for the whole alphabet. Can you identify the mark?

A: This mark was used by Ceramika Artystyczna (also known as “CA”), a pottery founded in Boleslawiec, Poland, in 1950. The town was originally called Bunzlau and was a part of Germany until the end of World War II when it became part of Poland. Pottery has been made in the area since the seventh century. The Ceramika Artystyczna website, ceramikaartystyczna.com, says it’s a co-op of artists that make hand-painted stoneware in traditional and artists’ signature (Unikat) patterns.
