Wallace Nutting “prints,” as they are called by collectors, are really hand-painted photographs. And Nutting was not the only photographer of the early 1900s selling colored photographs to be hung in the living room. Many regional photographers were selling to tourists. Early Twentieth Century Hand-Painted Photography: Identification & Values by Michael & Susan Ivankovich (Collector Books, Paducah, KY, 2005, 254 pages, $24.95) lists hundreds of these photographers and includes their history, examples of their work and values. A must for a collector’s library.
