Q: I have an 1800s sewing rocker I would like to know more about. Is it valuable?
A: Your rocking chair is not a sewing rocker. A sewing rocker doesn’t have arms, making it easier for someone to use when sewing or knitting. If the leather insert in the seat covers a hole, your rocking chair was probably originally a potty chair with a removable pot underneath. These were popular until around 1900, when flush toilets became common and many old potty chairs were altered to be used as regular chairs.
I have an EXACT duplicate to the one pictured. It was never a potty chair. It had the pressed paper seat. I never heard of a rocking chair being used as a potty chair, just straight chairs. Also, if it were a potty chair, there would be runners or atleast nail holes where the runners were that held the pot. You did not give any response to age or value.
I have a chair very similar to this that was passed down from my grandmother. On mine, the rockers were added later. The wood that the rockers are made of is different from the rest fo the chair.
I have a chair like this handed down from my husband’s grandmother and would like to know it’s value.
I have the rocking chair excatly like this picture in excellent condition. Is it potty chair? What is value for this chair? Wht year?
I really beg to differ with you on your discripsion of this chair….Ive been aroud a lot of those chairs and not one was made for that….The ring under the cardboard would of been finished and they where not…..way to ruff to be used for a potty…..
I HAVE A VARIETY OF SMALL CELLULOID DOLLS. ONE IS A VERY OLD WIND UP CRAWLING BABY. ARE THESE DOLLS OF ANY VALUE?
I have seen many potty chairs in my life but never one with rockers! I just cannot imagine rocking while using the potty!!
Are you sure about this Rocker? I can’t imagine a “rocking” potty chair with a bowl/bucket under it. Seems it would be difficult to use. Also, I have this exact same chair. The hole is much to large. Most people would fall through. It may not be a sewing rocker, but are you sure about it being a potty chair?
