Sumida … According to Us by Herbert Karp and Gardner Pond (PO Box 250709, Atlanta, GA 30325, c2001, $59.95, 192 pages) tells the history of the colorful 19th- and 20th-century Japanese pottery. Sumida ware is distinctive pottery with applied three-dimensional figures and an easily identified orange overglaze. The first 32 pages cover history, and the next 160 pages are filled with color photos, including marks. Possibly the only recent book on this pottery.
