Old color slides have a life expectancy of 20 to 25 years if cared for properly. Low heat, low light, low humidity, and vertical storage is best. Do not store slides in the cardboard boxes they came in. Get acid-free storage containers. Consider transferring them to a digital format.

Avoid spray-on dusting products labeled “no wax.” They may contain silicone oil that doesn’t protect furniture from water damage and can interfere with refinishing.

To store antique and vintage textiles, use padded, not wire, hangers. Use fabric, not plastic, bags. Keep the textiles away from moisture, sun, or a hot attic.

Have an inventory of your collections and adequate insurance.
