If you have a navigation system in your car, don’t list your address as “home” in the destination list. A parking attendant or thief would know how to locate your home and would also know it’s unoccupied. Use a street crossing or nearby school or church as your “home” goal.

The inside of an electric clock is warm and dark-the perfect home for a roach, especially if the clock is in the kitchen. Spray for the insects on the outside of the clock case. Open the clock carefully to spray inside. Spray only the case, not the works.

Repainting your front door or kitchen cabinets? Don’t put brass hardware back on the doors for at least a week. Paint fumes hasten discoloration. (This tip is from the brass refinisher who is redoing our front doorknobs and locks.)

Green-colored corrosion is sometimes found on old jewelry. It will spread if not removed. Clean with a mixture of a tablespoon of vinegar, a tablespoon of salt, and a cup of hot water. Rub with an old toothbrush or a nylon scouring pad. Dry completely with towels and a hair dryer set on cool.
