Old glass in a mirror reflects with an off-white tone. Hold the edge of a white card against the glass. If it has a white reflection that matches the color of the card, it is probably late Victorian or newer. The card reflection will be more yellow or gray if the glass was made before 1850.

To loosen a rusted metal part on a toy or tool, try soaking it in Coca-Cola.

 Some experts suggest that you do not wash silverware in the dishwasher. The detergent is abrasive and the silverÆs patina will eventually be removed. The cement in old hollow-handled knives may melt, too, and then the knife must be repaired.

When the weather is warm, open windows so your books can get a breath of fresh air.
