To clean a lithographed tin container or tray, use KIT car wax or a similar product. It is a product meant for an automobile, and it does not scratch. Test a corner of the tin by rubbing on a bit of the car wax with a soft, damp cloth. The yellow wax will change to dark brown as the dirt is removed. If the rag turns any other color, stop; you are removing color from the tin. After cleaning, just buff, do not rinse.
