The Writing on the Vase

Words of wisdom from a dealer, “The less writing on the bottom of a vase, the older it is.” Eighteenth-century pottery and porcelain is unmarked or has a signature or small trademark. By the 1860s, many factories were using number and letter codes to indicate type of clay, molds, and more. The country of origin was used after 1891.
