When you go on an antiquing trip in a rented car, use your cell phone to take a picture of the car and license plate. It’s easy to forget the new numbers.

Not everyone has a cell phone, let alone one that takes pictures. Carry a small spiral bound note pad with a pen/pencil clipped to it. It fits in a pocket and is not as noticeable as a cell phone.
