How to Properly Dispose of (Retire) an American Flag
If your American flag is tattered and can no longer be used, be sure to dispose of it the official way. Give it to a Boy Scout, Girl Scout, American Legion post, or the U.S. military. They will do the official ceremony that includes burning the old flag.

Some thrift shops are honorable and will treat flags properly, but one I worked at routinely tossed them into the dumpster along with old paint and other disrespectful nonsense. It’s ok to give the good ones to folks like those suggested, too. They’ll find new homes for them.
