Watch out for price tags that harm the items they’re stuck on. Sticky labels leave a residue that discolors over time. They’re especially harmful to paper and painted tin. Felt markers should not be used on unglazed pottery or porcelain. Some of the ink will be absorbed and never come off. And watch out for a label that covers a decoration or mark.

Sticky tags on paper make me cringe! I see so many dealers doing this and it makes me crazy! One trick I learned when I worked for a used book dealer, was to use lighter fluid to remove sticky tags and residue from book jackets, etc. The lighter fluid evaporates quickly, and does not stain the paper. I sometimes use Simichrome polish to remove felt marker from glass and glazed pottery pieces, but have found nothing that takes it off of unglazed surfaces. Thrift shops are especially guilty of marking items this way.
