19th-Century Silk Trade Banners
Early in our country’s history, skilled tradesmen decided to form trade associations to share their knowledge, promote their skills and provide for their widows and families. The Maine Charitable Mechanic Association hired a painter to create large silk banners for the members’ various trade groups and 17 were sold at a James D. Julia auction this year.
