The Stained Finger, a publication of the Society of Inkwell Collectors, warns of recently seen reproductions: enameled inkwells in the Longwy style with marks that are not Longwy’s. Elaborate metal inkstands decorated with animals and scrolls plus ceramic inkwells are now selling as reproductions on the German and French eBay sites, but they could show up here not so clearly identified. Be careful.

Fake tin advertising signs made since the 1960s could fool an unsuspecting collector. The signs were deliberately made to look old, and most of the products and companies advertised on them never existed. Some were made for restaurant chains like T.G.I. Fridays and have re-entered the collectibles market. Check the backs of any signs you’re interested in. Old signs have a dark green or black back. The backs of reproduction signs are usually gray, white or shades of tan-gold.
