Update on Moths

A knowledgeable reader, S.L.T., a textile conservator, wrote, “I am concerned about the information in the Tips section of Kovels’ May 2015 issue about the use of paradichlorobenzene.” She sent several government studies that say it is a suspected carcinogen. We should have mentioned that mothballs and toilet deodorizers are the most common forms of the chemical used in a home. It’s the fumes that are dangerous. If you must get rid of moths this way, be sure to close all doors or drawers to keep the fumes away from you but near the insects. There are other ways to kill moths that might be better choices.
