A North Carolina reader sent this photo of his Codd bottle opener in response to our hotline about Codd bottles in the January 2011 issue of Kovels newsletter. He writes: “While a Codd bottle could be opened by forcing the sealing marble down with your finger, a round cap-like device called a Codd-bottle opener, fitted inside with a plunger, was the primary opener, especially in pubs in England and Ireland. They were made of wood or Bakelite.”
