Hi. I have an antique solid brass powder flask, but don’t know its real age, place of origin, or value. Could anyone help to identify it? It has an elaborate shell design and two legs which are two-headed eagles. Chain with two stoppers are intact. Also, would it detract from the value if I should polish it?

Thank you Martha! I appreciate your taking time to write and caution me against polishing the piece. Recently I discovered that the Romanov family also used the double headed eagle in their crest and that I shouldn’t rule out Russian as a possibility, but I still can’t find a similar example.

First of all,, do not clean it in any way other than possibly a soft brush and cloth to remove dust in small areas !! Nothing at all that might scratch the surface !! My suggestion would be to check the sites associated with militaria for your location !! The eagles you mentioned sound like some that were used in Germany and that region !! Only have slight and fleeting experience in this area !! Sorry !!
