We found two of these beautiful wooden boxes in a local antiques shop. But we have no idea how they were originally used. Any ideas?

Size ?? It looks like these are perhaps Japanese Bento boxes depending on size !! Which are basically Japanese lunch boxes !! They come in many sizes and shapes !! Most had a second shelf that fit inside and others had 3 or 4 shelves !! What are the metal staves I see on the inside ??
