Brick collecting was a popular hobby before 1950. Although bricks were made by the ancient Romans, collectors in the United States, Australia and Great Britain seemed to want just local bricks. Each had a name or emblem. The International Brick Collectors Association (ICBA) has swap meets; bricks are not sold, just bartered. My small collection is part of the edging of my patio. Favorite brick says, “Do not spit on sidewalk.” Roads were required to be made of bricks in Ohio for many years until about the 1930s Most are now covered with asphalt. Collectors watch for destroyed buildings and roads and their exposed bricks.
