We saw so much at Art Basel and Design/Miami that we’re continuing the report we started last month. Each item pictured cost thousands of dollars. We didn’t buy anything, but we enjoy these shows—and all the hullabaloo surrounding them—every year.
With Terry & Kim Kovel – Miami Beach, Part 2
Look carefully. This chandelier is made of countless pairs of suspended eyeglasses. The curve of the lenses adds extra sparkle. The chandelier was created by British designer Stuart Haygarth. He explains on his website, StuartHaygarth.com, that he likes to work on design projects that “revolve around the collections of objects.” He collects the objects, then assembles them “in a way that transforms their meaning.” Haygarth continues: “My work is about giving banal and overlooked objects a new significance. The finished piece of work takes various forms, such as chandeliers, installations, functional and sculptural objects.” (photo credit: Stuart Haygarth)

Here’s a modern table that was one of our favorites at the show. Large yellow letters spelling out WHAAM! hold up a large square glass tabletop. Notice the exclamation point—it lies at the side of the table. Similar tables used other letters of the alphabet.
This statue of a bird, a copy of a small table ornament, is close to 4 feet tall. Notice the full-size beaded purses hanging from its wings.
This is one of a pair of 14K gold earrings. The orange spots are the fingerprints of the owner—each pair is made to order. The fingerprint is copied in a soft material that’s used to make a mold for the gold earrings. The idea is already being copied by a firm that sells silver jewelry online and through a catalog.
One dealer was selling “insider art.” He had removed pages from a notebook of drawings made between 1936 and 1966 by a patient at a Missouri state mental hospital. The price for each framed two-sided pencil and crayon drawing was $2,000 to $3,000, and there were about 10 on display. The artist, known as “The Electric Pencil,” was James Edward Deeds Jr. (1908-1987). He used the spelling “Ectlectrc” here perhaps because he was treated with ECT, electroconvulsive therapy. The drawings were recovered from a dumpster in the 1970s.
You need a lot of space for this sculpture, a life-sized section of a fruit market. The blue, red, green, yellow and silver “fruits” were made by the artist. The wooden crates have copies of old labels on their sides.
