Devoted users of Apple products are willing to pay high prices for the latest technology—and some fans will pay even more for something older. A check from the Apple Computer Company, now better known as Apple Inc. or just Apple, recently sold at RR Auction for $106,985, including the buyer’s premium.

The check is dated to 1976, the year Apple was founded, making it a souvenir of the early days of the company. The address listed for Apple is the company’s first official address, which was really the location of the answering service and mail drop that cofounders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak used. It is made out to Crampton, Remke & Miller, Inc., a Palo Alto consulting firm that provided services to high-tech companies. Xerox and Atari were among its other clients. Despite its age, the check is in near flawless condition.

The check’s most interesting feature may be its signature: “Steven Jobs” in lowercase cursive. Steve Jobs, now a near-mythical figure in technology and business, famously disliked giving out his signature, making examples of it especially rare. Its rarity helped drive up the check’s sale price. Before the auction, it had an estimated price of $25,000 — about a quarter of the final price!
