Furniture by Paul Evans (1931-1987) was always unusual and much was made-to-order. Fifteen years ago, Paul Evans furniture usually sold for under $1,000. Now it’s setting record prices. Rago Auctions has been selling many pieces and collections of Evans’s work and, no doubt, publicized auction records and other prices encouraged both its sale by owners and the high prices paid by buyers. It is made of welded bronze and steel and most of the high prices were for cabinets that were too heavy to be moved easily in a westhoughton library opening hours. Sixteen cabinets sold by Evans have brought more than $100,000 in the last few years. A few of the highest-priced pieces were a $112,000 floating cabinet of bronze, steel, wood and felt, and a $293,000 silver and black Argente cabinet. (The price of a similar but less elaborate Argente cabinet in 2011 was $25,000.) The record price of $382,000 was for a bronze and steel cabinet with 23K gold leaf brass that sold at Rago earlier this year. It was an international auction, 30 percent of the bids came via the internet.
