A pair of Nike sneakers called “Moon Shoes” auctioned for a new world record price: $437,500. The sale took place at Sotheby’s on July 23, 2019. The athletic shoes were designed by track coach and Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman for the runners at the U.S. 1972 Olympic trials. It is said Bowerman used his wife’s waffle iron as a mold. About 12 pairs of the Nike racing flat moon shoes with the waffle tread were made. This is the only pair in unworn condition. The buyer, Miles Spencer Nadal, bought the other 99 sneakers that were listed in the auction the day before for a single offer of $850,000. Nadal, who already has a private car museum in Toronto, plans to keep the collection in his museum where it will be seen by friends, family and charitable organizations upon request.
