The sale of antique and new ivory has new rules from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that go into effect July 6, 2016. It prohibits the importation of most African elephant ivory except for items made with ivory parts, such as musical instruments used in orchestras, items that are part of a traveling exhibition, a household move or inheritance (with special criteria), and ivory for law enforcement or scientific purposes. Also exempt are furniture, firearms and other antiques that have less than seven ounces of ivory. “Bona fide” antiques (age proven by a professional appraisal or verifiable document) are exempt as well. Bottom line: most African elephant ivory, including antique ivory, still can’t be imported. We tried to list the parts of the law that affect collectors, but we suggest you read the long and complicated regulations at https://10172-presscdn-0-75-pagely.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/final-rule-african-elephant-4d.pdf.
