It took over four million votes to decide the winners in an international contest. Should the tokens used in the 82-year-old game of Monopoly be updated? About 20 different official tokens have been used, as well as many more in over 300 licensed versions of the game. The thimble, cannon, flat iron, top hat, shoe and battleship were the original six mentioned in the patent. This year, the new tokens will be a penguin, T-Rex dinosaur and rubber ducky, perhaps because of interest in the environment. Ousted were the thimble, boot and wheelbarrow that all represented labor. Games with new tokens will be available in August. If you want the old ones, try house sales, flea markets and online. Most sell for $10 or less.
Old, new, does it really matter enough for people to get upset about? It’s a game for goodness sakes. If you really want to be upset about something, how about the values the game represents and promotes. However, I think the rubber ducky is adorable. Just have fun.
I’m not sure I like that all of the retired pieces are labor related, got to get a little push for labor with the kiddos, but I do like the new pieces, especially the T-Rex. Besides it IS a game, and helps to teach some money handling, bank experience, and risk. o, I’m ok with that!
Shaking my head, unbeleavable its a game…thats the crazest thing, the kids of this world needs a big time tough love and grow up
Oh. Ugh. Is someone out there really calling someone else (the manufacturers of Monopoly?), a “snowflake” and I guess they meant “millennial”. ESPECIALLY on a site discussing GAME “PEICES”, for pete’s sake!! And say, Bubba, lots and lots of men know how to iron.
If the $200 amount for “passing GO” was adjusted for inflation, I wonder how much it would be today.
You could give me $5,000 for passing “GO” – but I’ll never do it as a T-Rex, penguin, or ducky. BAD MOVE!
Can’t offend the Snowflakes Millennials with something that might be offensive like something women might use in the house like an iron
