What’s hot that wasn’t last year? And will it keep going up in price? We noticed in 2015 that many marble busts were among the early bird things bought at the big Florida antiques show. The prices were from $200 to about $1,000. Dealers told us that white marble busts of men and women, antique or vintage, were wanted by decorators of modern houses. Last year we noticed oil paintings of a single person standing or in a chair, probably someone’s long-forgotten ancestor, were selling at shows. Especially folk art examples. The rich hire artists to paint portraits of the family. The average collector wants a landscape or still life. Are paintings and busts of pseudo-ancestors meant to suggest an important family background? Could it be a substitute for the collection of photographs displayed on the piano in many articles about famous people? If you decide to get a family portrait, be sure to find a talented artist. Modern portraits by Alex Katz, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close and the Wyeths are already selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars as art, not family history.
