Although we think “life-sized” might over-estimate President Abraham Lincoln’s height, a so-called 9-foot-tall “life-size” painting of the 16th president by W.F.K. Travers is going to be installed at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery on February 10, in time for “Presidential Family Fun Day” on February 18 at the museum. Admission is free. It might be worth a trip to see the portrait, which was created from life in 1865, the year of Lincoln’s death. It is only one of three known large-scale paintings of the president. The artwork comes to the National Portrait Gallery on long-term loan from the Hartley Dodge Foundation. The founder, Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, acquired the painting from her family in the 1930s.
