Enjoy your Christmas tree and other decorations but be sure to plan now to properly care for and then recycle the extra wrappings and greenery. Do not put the tree near a working fireplace or other heat source. Keep water in the tree stand at all times so the tree will not dry out. And turn the lights off when you go to bed. Don’t wash or clean old glass ornaments. The paint flakes off. Just dust them, then dust again before you store them for next year. Don’t try to restore old ornaments. Restoration lowers the value. Wrap each ornament individually but not in newspaper that may stain the glass. Never burn an evergreen tree or branches from wreaths in the fireplace. It makes creosote that blocks the chimney. Many cities will pick up an old tree to recycle it but not if it is still covered with tinsel and other trim.
