Animation cels are going up in price. Disney cels sold for high prices at Heritage‘s February 2013 auction. A “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” cel showing Snow White with the dwarfs against a hand-painted background brought $20,315. Cels from other Disney and Warner Brothers animated features and cartoons also sold over estimate. These cels were hand-drawn and used to make the features. They are not copies made for gift shops in recent years. When buying Disney cels, remember that Walt Disney autographs on framed cels were often written by an assistant, not Disney himself. And the value of an autographed cel goes down if it is signed to a named person.
