It was a collector’s dream: A random purchase of a packet of Panini Prizm Football cards led to a 13-year-old getting a $100,000 check. It also shows once again what we collectors already know: Research and know your collectibles so that when you find something rare, you recognize its worth.

In early June, Johnny Stone from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, found a one-of-a-kind card of New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones in a box of Prizm cards he preordered in February. The order was supposed to come in April but was delayed to early June. Stone opened the box on a Facebook livestream. And (dramatically!) found a rare Black Finite rookie card halfway through the pile of cards. A video of the livestream (shows the moment of truth).

How rare is it to catch the moment? Pretty much unique, we would say. As the video shows, Johnny knew immediately he had something special with the Jones card. The New England Patriots drafted Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He is currently the team’s quarterback.

Collectors contacted the two after the video aired, and they ultimately sold the card for a whopping $100,000. It was reported that soon after that, the buyer sold the card for $175,000.

I am curious as to why this particular card was worth so much, considering the fact, that he is a present player?
Hope you can help me understand.
    Thank you
