The Museum of the Bible opened on November 17, 2017 in Washington D.C., not far from the National Mall. The impressive building holds a few thousand artifacts. Steve Green, the president of Hobby Lobby, a chain of arts and crafts stores, spent $205 million for 40,000 artifacts to display in the 430,000-square-foot museum. He also spent over $3 million to settle a lawsuit with the Justice Department. Prosecutors claimed that thousands of the artifacts were smuggled into the U.S. from the Middle East. Iraq has already asked to have their artifacts returned. Those who have visited the Bible museum said it is impressive, with ancient tablets, views of life in biblical times, scenes of Bible stories, and objects ranging from Elvis Presley’s Bible to ancient Torahs. And best of all, there is no charge to visit.

marthahill Thank you for (sadly) proving my point on the current intolerence of the world today. I am sorry you can’t live and let live. Is this what your “proof” teaches you? I don’t believe in trying to force anyone to see things as I do. Why must I stay silent to prove this? My opinion offends you so much you would silence it? Very, very intolerent. & very much a major part of what is wrong with this world.
Read post 1 & 2 we were not the first to post on this subject !! Seems like those that do not believe in anything are never happy unless everyone sees things as they do !! If as you say you believe in everyones right to believe as they wish the best thing you can do is to stay silent !! But I know that is just wishful thinking on my part !! All I say is show me some proof !! We have the bible,,what do you have to prove your point ??
The nastiness of the responses show what is wrong in this country today. People are allowed to have different opinions. Comments referring to tin foil and basements is just throwing poo at each other. Ask yourself what good does this do? Would you be persuaded to think about anything differently if you were on the receiving end of this? For the record, I am an atheist who supports the right for others to believe in whatever god they choose. Just as they should respect my right to not believe.
Freedom from religion is a right ?? Show me where it says that in the constitution ?? Oh,, I forgot,,it doesn`t say that !! But it does say the free exercise of religion which also means you have the same right not to believe !! But honestly,, the alternative to everlasting life does not sound appealing to me !! The problem with your theory is that you will not know if you are right or wrong until you die !! I don`t think you are allowed do-overs !! So I would say just in case we are right,, you might want to re-think your position !!
One other thought,, birth control is cheap !! Try using it and there would be no abortion !! If I approve of same sex relationships or transgender people is not important,,its if God approves or not that counts !!
Hobby Lobby… enough said. Ugh.
Almost.
Millions spent on questionable items while people around the world need help. Actually, the world, itself, needs help as resources are used irresponsibly and the planet further polluted by it.
Perhaps he should just donate them to the people of Afghanistan. Now those people know what to do with antiquities and national treasures.
Preservation of artifacts is paramount as many have already been destroyed or sold by current muslim inhabitants to stock the coffers of their terrorist activity. Those unfamiliar with museum protcols should definitely employ a trained museum manager with an education in museum management and other specialists in the hope of avoiding such problems. All items should be vetted, provenance & authentication examined and there may still be mistakes.
Previous comment s/b on Twitter. “These owners should be ashamed of themselves for trying to force their beliefs on anyone else. Freedom from religion is one of our most treasured freedoms.” There is no force of any kind conveyed or implied. And there is no such thing as “freedom from religion.” The first amendment assures free exercise of religion.
Unfortunately, people like you who display an amazing amount of ignorance and in this case, straight out stupidity are what is wrong with this country. You obviously didn’t read that this is a privately owned museum, no tax dollars were spent on it. You obviously have never read the United States Constitution, it’s not Freedom from Religion, it’s Freedom of Religion, which you appear to be trying to deny others of that right. No one is forcing you to attend the museum, in fact, it would be best if you stay home in your basement and rant at the world. The entire world of antiques, antiquities and historical treasures is often saved by the very same people that you hate. This includes Kovel. It’s a shame that you are so narrow minded, ignorant, and just plain delusional in your belief systems. I imagine that you’ve used a lot of tin-foil in your sad life.
Yes, this IS a museum. There is NO admission fee, so the owners are ‘not enriching themselves’.
They also are not FORCING anyone to enter, so no, they are not ‘trying to force their beliefs on anyone else.’
Christianity is not something ‘worn on the sleeve’. It is a way of life for genuine believers, and also makes the world a better place.
So take your hatred and slide back under your rock. May God bless and forgive you.
Steve Green is a very wealthy man who owns a chain of stores that follow his doctrine of disapproving birth control, abortion, same-sex relationships and transgender people.
Now he has opened a museum that contains plundered and fake artifacts so he can prove what a great christian he is.
Why am I not surprised?
The idea of any group or groups displaying National Treasures which were plundered from another country is criminal. The owners of this museum got a slap on the wrist. The only remedy should have been to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law and to imprison those who were involved.
Not only that, the display of items which are probably fakes and forgeries is repugnant. These owners should be ashamed of themselves for trying to force their beliefs on anyone else. Freedom from religion is one of our most treasured freedoms.
If the owners of this ‘museum’ were truly benevolent they wouldn’t wear their ‘religion’ on their sleeves. Instead of enriching themselves they would be helping humanity.
