Q: My wife bought this bowl at a yard sale last summer. The words “The Upjohn Unipet Company” are embossed on the bottom. I’ve tried to find information about it online, but the only references I could find were to the Upjohn Company, the pharmaceuticals manufacturer. Any information you can supply would be very much appreciated.

A: Upjohn Company, the phramaceuticals firm, registered the tradename “Unipet” in 1960 for a line of nutritional supplements used by veterinarians. The bowl you have is a treat container that was a promotional item made for Upjohn by McCoy Pottery. Some, like yours, were decorated with black cats and dogs. Others featured orange cats and dogs. We’ve seen them with a tall lid with a clapper inside. When the lid is removed, the “bell” rings–and pets nearby know they are in for a treat. Value, about $30.
