Sphinx Mark

Q: I have a really old blue and white bowl. The mark has a sphinx on it and the words “Petrus Regout & Co.” and “Lasso.” Any information on this mark?

A: Petrus Regout established the De Sphinx pottery in Maastricht, Holland, in 1836. The pottery was known for its transfer-printed earthenware. This sphinx mark was used beginning in 1878 after Regout died and his sons took over the business. In 1958 the company merged with Societe Ceramique. Lasso is the pattern name.
