Q: I bought this coffeepot at a house sale. The mark that says "Kahla" is stamped on the bottom. The word "Germany" is printed underneath the mark. Can you tell me who made the coffeepot and when it was made?

A: Porcelain Factory Kahla started using this mark after 1900. It was used until about 1927. So your coffeepot was made between about 1901 and 1927. The company was founded by Christian Eckardt in Kahla, Thuringia, Germany, in 1844. Kahla was located in East Germany from 1949 to 1990, so during those years the porcelain factory was operated by the state. It was privatized again in 1991, after Germany was reunified, but went into bankruptcy in 1993. It was reestablished in 1994 as Kahla/Thuringen Porcelain and is still in business.
