Pottery & Porcelain Marks – Circle—Oval: Most marks of circles or ovals appear in the 20th and 21st centuries, with very few coming from the late 19th century. Oval marks usually began appearing in the 20th century. The circles are usually drawn with a single line or formed from a chain of words. Some circle marks, from Staffordshire, England and various cities in the United States, were inspired by the Order of the Garter. King Edward III created it in 1348 as the highest order of knighthood in England. The honor was bestowed after a tournament during which knights would prove their worth. It is still an honor bestowed today. Globes (1880s-present) and wreaths (1880s-present), varying in detail, are also here.
