Vintage Halloween decorations auctioned in New Jersey are featured in a sale report in Kovels On Antiques & Collectibles October 2019 newsletter. The decorations are hard to find and bring strong prices because they were usually made of paper or pulp that were easily torn or broken. See the grinning witch’s head jack-o’-lantern made of composition with inset paper features that sold for $4,500. Other pictured pieces include a cardboard and cloth dancing couple with pumpkin heads that went for $1,920, a skeleton costume with a papier-mâché skull that brought $540, as well as other menacing figures and lanterns.

Shaker furniture and accessories sold at a Massachusetts auction. The Shakers made functional furniture, free of excess ornamentation. Pieces pictured in Kovels’ October issue were used in various Shaker communities and included an 1830s cherry, birch and pine drop leaf table that auctioned for more than $14,000; a pine hanging cupboard with original blue paint for $6,700; a walnut seed cabinet for $1,600; and more.

Collectors always love the graphics and nostalgic imagery of advertising signs, displays, and other items related to beer. Collectively called “breweriana,” an Ohio auction offered more than 200 lots that advertised beer. A C.L. Centlivre Brewing Co. sign that pictures the red brick factory, its smoking stacks, and a bustling 1890s street scene sold for $600, while a metal Schlitz lady with a light-up globe brought $300. More breweriana awaits in Kovels’ latest newsletter.
