November 22 marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. This rocking chair, used by President Kennedy, is part of a collection of Kennedy memorabilia that will go up for auction at Heritage in Dallas on November 23. Opening bid for the chair is $50,000.

The “North Carolina” rocking chair was one of about 14 specially made for President Kennedy by P & P Chair Company of Asheboro, North Carolina. The chairs were divided among his residences to help alleviate his chronic back pain. This chair is one used by the president in the White House. It’s being sold with three photographs of the chair, one with Kennedy sitting in it in the Oval Office. There are also two letters of authenticity from Evelyn Lincoln, the president’s personal secretary.

Among the 100-plus items that are offered at Heritage are two flags and desktop items from the Oval Office, photographs, campaign posters, buttons, lapel pins, ribbons, lighters and glasses, as well as notes, invitations and papers that belonged to Jacqueline Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and other tribute items. Other Kennedy collectibles to look for are bumper stickers, magazine covers, record albums with his speeches and White House Christmas cards. Also find kitschy items like calendars, dishes and salt and pepper shakers that picture the President and First Lady and Jackie Kennedy head vases.

We will post the auction price on November 24. Troutman Chair Co., the furniture manufacturer that bought P & P Chair Co. in 2009, still makes “Kennedy Rockers” and says most are used to help with back pain.
