Handbag designer Judith Leiber, the queen of crystal clutches, died over the weekend at the age of 97. Her purses were long the favorites of Hollywood stars and multiple First Ladies, including Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton. The Budapest-born artist’s work, frequently tongue-in-cheek and whimsical, often cost in the four and five-figure range.
Even in her late 90s, Ms. Leiber showed a sense of humor: In 2017, she designed a limited edition, crystal-embedded clutch shaped like rolled up dollar bills, done in collaboration with Alexander Wang. It cost $5,000 and was carried by Beyonce in the Tidal X: Brooklyn event in New York City in October 2017.
A Judith Leiber CupCake Minaudiere Evening Bag, in pink gold and shaped like a cupcake, can be found on eBay for $4,000.
