Never try to clean an oil painting with a cut potato. This is an old wives’ tale and the method can damage the painting. And never wash an oil painting. It will dull the colors and possibly damage the canvas.

    My mother was an artist who painted almost exclusively in oils. She cleaned old paintings with a mixture of turpentine and oil, using a paintbrush to do each sq. inch. This resulted in the gleam of oil painting. You did not mention how cleaning should be done, only how it should not be done. EH
