Q: I would like some information on some Art Nouveau candlesticks. They’re marked with a crown on the bottom and “EW, Turn Wien.” Below that is “Made in Austria.” What can you tell me about them?

A: Your candlesticks were made by Ernst Wahliss. He bought the Alfred Stellmacher Porcelain Factory in Turn, Austria (now Czech Republic) in 1894 and ran it under his own name. Wahliss died in 1900 and his sons took over the business. The factory was renamed Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss in 1905. The porcelain factory became part of Porzellanfabrik Union AG in 1921 and production ended in 1929. This mark used from 1897 to 1906. Your candlesticks are worth over $1,000, depending on size.
