Q: We have a game table that was probably purchased in the late 1930s or early 1940s. It has a checkerboard top that slides out to reveal a backgammon board. Two rectangular drawers hold the checkers and backgammon pieces. There are scratches on the checkerboard, but otherwise it’s in good condition. I couldn’t find the name of the manufacturer. What is it worth and where are the best places to sell it?

A: Game tables were popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They became popular again in the 1950s. Tables have been made with special tops for checkers, backgammon, chess and card games. Some have folding tops or tops that swivel or slide to one side to reveal another game board. Most have a drawer for game pieces or cards. Some have wells or slides at the four corners to hold drinks. Elaborate tables with mother-of-pearl, ivory or exotic wood inlay were made in the 18th century. Some of them sell for over $1,000. Game tables made in the 20th century and later sell for $100 to $500 depending on style and condition.
