Q: While searching through old photos in my grandmother's blanket chest, we found a Peters Shell and Cartridge "rug." It's made of a thick felt-like material. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it was for the glass showcase in a gun shop—a place to lay a fine pistol while showing it to a new customer. What do you think? Does it have any value? Grandma was born in 1900 and Grandpa was an avid hunter.

A: The Peters Cartridge Co. was founded by brothers Gershom and O.E. Peters in 1887 in Kings Mills, Ohio. Many Peters promotional items were issued in the early 1900s. This may have been a promotional item or it may have been used in a gun shop, as you suggest. Remington Arms bought Peters Cartridge Co. in 1934. The Peters factory closed in 1944, although Remington continued to make Peters-brand shot shells until the 1960s. Gun-related items sell well. You should contact an auction that sells guns to sell your "rug."
