Many visitors to this week were searching for majolica items. A collector paid $1,659 for this majolica strawberry basket at a recent Skinner auction in Boston. It was made in England around 1874 by George Jones (c.1824-1893). Nice way to get ready for strawberry season!

Majolica is pottery glazed with an opaque tin enamel that conceals the color of the clay body. It has been made since the fourteenth century, but Victorian majolica is colorful and easily found.
