Spool Furniture (1815-1900)
From about 1815 to the late Victorian era, “spool furniture” was in style in many rural homes. A lathe was developed that made it possible to create elaborate turnings, which some say were originally cut apart to make wooden buttons or spools for thread. Furniture makers realized the turnings would be attractive as parts of chairs, beds, and tables, and so began the development of spool furniture.
