In the late nineteenth century, painted pieces were not in style, and many were stripped down to the wood. Pieces from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries often had carving and turnings that were painted black. Some pieces made with less carving and applied turnings were decorated with painted red, blue, yellow, black, and white geometric patterns. Furniture was also given a painted finish that resembled grained wood.
