A coin from the collection of fashion designer Stuart Weitzman brought in $18.9 million in a June 2021 Sotheby’s auction. The price for a coveted 1933 Double Eagle Coin was nearly double the previous record for the coin. It is the only privately owned Double Eagle. Designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt it has an image of Liberty on one side and an American eagle in flight on the other. It is America’s last gold coin struck for circulation, ending a tradition that started in 1795.
