You can watch the famous picture “Blue Boy” by Thomas Gainsborough being cleaned and restored in time for its 250th birthday. The picture is at the Huntington Library in southern California. It was torn, faded and the paint was beginning to flake. The conservator will use images from a modern microscope, X-ray and infrared tools. In 1994, a surprise was found with an X-ray. A dog was discovered in the original picture that had been painted out by the artist before the picture was finished.
