Or at least the superstitious colonists thought so. Collectors still search for antique glass witch bottles and pottery Bellarmine bottles. They were filled with magical items like fingernails, pins, nails, felt hearts, and even some bodily fluids that would keep the witch away from the house. It worked only if it was sealed and buried upside down near an entry door. The English tradition was brought to the colonies and a buried 18th-century witch bottle has been found in the United States.
